What is Tourism Levy?

Levy is a charge at the rate of 2% on the gross sales derived from the sale of accommodation, food, drinks and all other services offered in scheduled establishments.

Who Pays 2% Tourism Levy?

Charging a minimum of Ksh. 250 per person / per night, including the provision of breakfast meal or any other services.

Making minimum gross sales of Ksh. 3 Million per annum or an average of Ksh. 250,000 for the first three (3) trading months, incase of new establishments.

On which services is levy charged?

Hotels and Restaurants are required to pay 2% Catering Training and Levy shall be paid by the owner of every regulated tourism activity and service under the Tourism Act 2011 schedule nine class A & B Enterprises a tourism levy receipt derived from the sale of food and/ or drinks, the provision of accommodation and other services.

(i) Hotels; (ii) Members clubs; (iii) Motels; (iv) Inns; (v) Hostels; (vi) Health and spa resorts; (vii) Retreat lodges; (viii) Ecolodges; (ix) Tree houses; (x) Floatels; (xi) Service flats; (xii) Service apartments; (xiii) Beach cottages; (xiv) Holiday cottages; (xv) Game lodges; (xvi) Tented camps; (xvii) Safari or mobile camps; (xviii) Bandas; (xix) Cultural homes and centres;(xx) Villas; (xxi) Homestays; (xxii) Guest houses; and (xxiii) Time shares.
Class B Enterprises

How do I remit the 2% Levy?

I am getting an Error when I pay via Mpesa

Common Mpesa errors  result from:-

  1. Using an invalid eslip number
  2. Using an old code
  3. Repeating a previously used eslip number
  4. Putting spaces and other characters with the eslip number
  5. Putting an amount that does not match the amount on the eslip
  6. Using a C code with lower case c

What is the due date of remitting levy?

Levy is payable by the 10th day of the following subsequent month of sale.

What are the consequences of late payment and non compliance?

    Levy payments received after the 10th day of the following month are subject to an instant penalty of Kshs. 5,000.00.
    An additional penalty of 3% of the amount of the levy due of each month or part thereof during which the amount due remains unpaid.
    Failure to pay levy is a criminal offence punishable in a court of law and liable to a fine not exceeding Kshs 20,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding 6 months or both.
    Any due amount not paid by the 10th day following month is a civil debt recoverable by the Trustee through courts or appointed agents.

How do I apply for an open position in TF?

The vacancy advertisement will be place both internally and externally media indicating the procedure  and details for application.

What happens after I submit my job application?

Your application will be logged into our database along with all the other applications for that position. The applications are evaluated for requirements stated in the job announcement. The mostqualified applicants will be contacted by the Head of Human Capital and Administration for an interview.

Will my application be considered if it is submitted after the closing date on the job announcement?

No. You must meet the stated deadline to be eligible for consideration for any position.

The period of time it takes to hire someone can be impacted by several factors; the number of applications received and the number of job openings.

What are your working business hours?

Our Office is open from 8:00 am through 5:00 pm Monday through Friday except for state observed holidays. For your added convenience our reception desk is open through the lunch hour and between 7:00am to 6:00pm

Can I apply for a job requiring a college degree, if I have not yet graduated?

Unless otherwise indicated, you must meet the education requirement at the time your application is filed.

What range of products and services are procured by TF?

Tourism Fund procures various Products and Services ranging from General Stationery, ICT products and services (Hardware and Software), Consultancy services and printing services among others.

How can I register as a supplier for TF?

TF Advertises for pre-qualification for all the required categories through the print Media and on TF official website. The requirements for pre-qualification will be issued and the pre-qualification document will be issued at the Head office.

Where can I find information on procurement notices?

All procurement notices and opportunities are published and available on the TF’s website or public in the newspapers. Potential suppliers are advised to browse through the relevant section of the procurement page to identify the specific products or goods that the TF is in need of.

I heard there is a procurement opportunity for a product or service within my field of activity. I want to participate. Who should I contact?

All active procurement opportunities are published on the procurement page of  and include details on how to participate in the selection process. Every procurement notice also includes the contact details of the person to whom all queries should be ad dressed.

Can small companies enter into business relationships with the TF?

Competition is open to any size of company. For specific assignments TF or its clients may require participants to demonstrate a minimum turnover or company size to qualify; in such cases the notice will clearly specify the requirements.

I missed the procurement notice deadline; can I still work with TF?

  • It is obviously possible to participate in other procurement opportunities but not the ones where the deadline has already passed (unless the deadline was extended).
  • A revision to the deadline is normally indicated in the notice. It is recommended that suppliers regularly visit the TF’s website to keep up to date with any changes in the notices including any possible extension.

How does the Tourism Fund pay suppliers?

Payment and other contractual terms are always negotiated and agreed with each supplier on a case-by-case basis and will depend upon the nature of the services, goods or works being provided. Any payment made thereafter willbe with in sixty days (60) through EFT for 1Million and above or through Cheques for less the amount.

How will I know what criteria TF is using for the evaluation of a tender?

Tender evaluation is always carried out in a comprehensive, equitable, auditable and transparent manner. To ensure the fairness of the process, evaluation criteria and methods are always defined in the tender documents/ Terms of Reference.

How long does the procurement process take?

The tentative timetable of each procurement process is specified in the tender document/Terms of Reference.

How will I know if I have been short-listed or not?

After evaluation process, the person submitting the successful tender will be notified that his/her tender has been accepted.  TF shall also notify all other persons submitting tenders that their tenders were not successful.

Can I ask for a debriefing to find out why I was unsuccessful in a tender?

Yes, any questions regarding why you were unsuccessful will be forwarded to you through an official written request.
